Current Events

On CNN.com I frequently read read articles regarding the election campaigns. Today, 9/12/07, there is one posted describing Hilary Clinton's opinions of the war in Iraq. Clinton stated that she wants to remove troops from Iraq immediately. Regardless of whether or not one supports troops stationed in Iraq, how can we possibly know what will happen if we decide to just leave the coutnry as is? Should we finish what our current leaders have started, build on it, or just uproot it completely? I chose to comment on this current event because I have many questions I feel my classmates can answer regarding what good can come out of promises that are being made today that will not take effect until late next year.

Talk about a sticky whippet. That is a good question. In general it is my personal opinion that if you break it you buy it. However, I really do think we are just postponing the inevitable by staying there and wasting a lot of peoples time and even more importantly, a lot of lives. I guess I would slowly move outta there and let the UN take over. They should have been the ones to deal with it in the first place because that is one of the reasons they exist but we decided that we were too good for the UN. I say cut and run but support the UN as best as possible. At least if it is the UN doing it the world can only blame itself and not just America.

Hi Dena!

Well... that sure is the question of the year, if only there was a good answer, or someone who knew what the good answer was!

Being a democrat, most people find it unusual that I do not support complete troop withdrawl. I agree with you that pulling out with cause some serious problems. However, my belief in that stems from the idea that we messed it up to begin with, and to leave the situation as is would be a terrible thing to do. However, I fully support the new belief that it may be impossible to force a democracy down the throats of those that will not accept it. I think that we need to accept that their culture is different than ours. BUT, I do not believe that pulling our troops out and letting everything fall through farther is the best solution.

Regarding Hillary's comment to withdraw all troops form Iraq immediately; she is simply saying this to garner votes and with complete disregard for the logistics and consequences of complete withdrawal. Not only would a withdrawal be defeatist but it would embolden our enemies to continue their loosing fight. Just like her Husband Hillary will say anything to get elected and even lie to save her own skin.

I have to agree with Nick on this one. A complete troop withdrawal from Iraq would be a disaster. Not to mention, Clinton doesn't want to bring all of the troops home, she wants to redeploy them.

I also think your question is one that everyone else is concerned about. One thing I've noticed is the difference between withdrawing all troops at once versus having a set deadline and set numbers for withdraw. I think a deadline is a good idea as it will give everyone the pressure to really consider what direction we need to take. I think it's obvious that the problems in Iraq have escalated to beyond our control as it is now concerning religious groups. A deadline for Congress would do what a deadline for college students on their term paper does: force us to get down to business and finally figure out exactly how to solve the problem. From what I've read on CNN, the deadline issue is more of a Republican concern than a Democrat one. The Dems are eager to leave Iraq behind and rub Bush's face in it.
